Harvey Elliott has described his return to Anfield as a fresh start, framing the next chapter of his Liverpool career as a second chance under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
The 23-year-old midfielder spent last season on loan at Aston Villa under a deal that included a conditional obligation to buy. The arrangement would have become permanent had Elliott reached a specified appearance threshold, but Villa chose not to activate the clause after limiting his minutes under Unai Emery.
A Reset Under Iraola
Elliott has already featured in Liverpool's first two pre-season matches under Iraola and said returning to Merseyside felt like an opportunity to reset.
"I'm here and it's kind of a second chance, if you want to call it," Elliott told reporters on Thursday. "Especially with the gaffer and new coaching staff coming in, it's another chance to impress and hopefully get in their good books."
"I wish Villa nothing but the very best. Unfortunately, the situation happened but it's another learning curve. I'm here now and I'm trying to cement my spot in the team or within the squad."
Nine Appearances and a Tough Year
Elliott joined Liverpool in 2019 but managed only nine appearances across all competitions for Villa last season. He acknowledged the spell ranked among the most demanding periods of his career.
"Mentally, it was a very tough one, it was a learning curve," he said. "It was an opportunity for me to experience something new, as much as I didn't want to do it, and I don't wish it upon any other player, because it's not nice at all."
Despite the frustration, Elliott said he holds no resentment toward Villa. He was part of the club's Europa League-winning campaign and viewed that as a meaningful end to a difficult year.
"But I have no hard feelings. I'm on the other side of it now. I was able to get through it and achieve something at the end of the season as well, another historical moment for the club, and to be part of that was another great situation."
Emery's Role in a Shortened Spell
Elliott's limited involvement at Villa came under Unai Emery, who managed the club throughout the loan period. With the buy clause tied to playing time, Elliott never reached the threshold required to trigger a permanent transfer.
That outcome has brought him back to Liverpool at a pivotal moment. Iraola has taken charge ahead of the new season, and Elliott is eager to prove he belongs in the first-team picture.
Premier League Return on the Horizon
Liverpool, who finished fifth last season, open their Premier League campaign at Newcastle United on August 23. Elliott will hope his pre-season work under Iraola translates into a more prominent role after a loan spell he is determined to leave behind.
For a player who once looked set for a longer stay in the Midlands, the focus now is squarely on making the most of a renewed opportunity at Anfield.
