Arsenal are entering a defining phase of squad planning for next season, and two standout performers from the global stage have moved to the centre of their recruitment thinking.
On the England side, the Gunners remain firm admirers of Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers. Across the Atlantic, Argentina striker Julian Alvarez continues to feature prominently on the club's shortlist as the market begins to take shape.
The picture has already been complicated by events at the World Cup. Brazil's early elimination has thrust Bruno Guimaraes' situation at Newcastle into sharper focus, with the midfielder understood to be pushing for a move to north London. That development has forced Arsenal into transfer mode sooner than some at the club might have preferred, and it has only intensified the scrutiny on their wider summer targets.
Rogers and Alvarez now look set to become central figures in that strategy. Internally, Rogers is viewed as an ideal addition for Arsenal's attacking plans. Persuading Aston Villa to sell, however, is unlikely to be straightforward.
Villa are already losing Youri Tielemans for a reported £35 million despite wanting to keep the Belgian midfielder. That departure has left the Midlands club determined not to part with another key player unless a huge offer arrives. As things stand, Rogers is expected to command a fee in excess of £120 million.
Any deal could ultimately depend on the England international pushing for a move himself. Arsenal are unlikely to know whether that is a realistic possibility until Rogers returns from the United States following England's World Cup campaign. Only then are the Gunners expected to begin testing Villa's resolve with formal discussions.
The situation surrounding Alvarez appears slightly more straightforward, largely because it is becoming clear the forward wants to leave Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona have recently submitted a significant offer that has put the Catalan club at the front of the queue. Atletico, though, are reluctant to strengthen a direct domestic rival, potentially creating an opening for a Premier League move instead.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth an initial €75 million, and he remains a player of significant interest to Arsenal as well as Paris Saint-Germain.
The 26-year-old's desire to move has been evident for some time. Atletico even rejected a €150 million bid from Real Madrid last month, but there is believed to be considerably less resistance to the prospect of selling him outside Spain. That dynamic could work in Arsenal's favour, even if the financial implications remain vast at a time when the club are weighing several other transfers.
Early informal enquiries have already been made in some quarters, and the weeks immediately after the tournament are likely to determine whether either pursuit moves from admiration to serious negotiation. For Arsenal, the post-World Cup window may prove just as decisive as anything that happens on the pitch.
